Baffling Encounter: Gigantic 6ft ‘Alien Creature’ Perplexes Beachgoers After Washing Ashore

A perplexing and massive extraterrestrial-like creature has left beachgoers in awe after being discovered on the shore. The unusual 6ft beast startled tourists as it was carried onto land by crashing waves over the weekend.

Cath Rampton and her husband Tom, both veterinarians, spotted the fish at the mouth of the Kennett River on Victoria’s southwest coast in Australia on Saturday. Cath revealed, “My understanding is it’s not a very big specimen; I think they can grow up to double that size.” Two days later, tourists Tim Rothman and James Barham also stumbled upon the creature. “We were walking along and saw this big lump on the sand,” Mr. Rothman told the Geelong Advertiser. “I’ve never seen anything like that before. It looked like an alien from a distance.”

Photographs captured the fish lying on the beach, with its flippers partially submerged in the wet sand. Its gray and white torso displayed signs of scars, and red blood stains were visible beneath its fin. In the wild, sunfish can reach lengths of up to 3m, stand 4.2m tall, and weigh a staggering 2.5 tonnes. These striking creatures are considered rare by experts.

Last year, another sunfish was discovered by fishermen at the mouth of the River Murray, also in Australia. That particular specimen weighed several hundred kilograms and measured 2.5m in length. The National Parks and Wildlife Service of South Australia shared the unusual find on social media, stating, “Our Park of the Month at Coorong National Park served up an unusual surprise for two fishers on the weekend—a sunfish that washed up onto the beach. These huge beauties are the world’s largest bony fish and can weigh more than a car.”

Typically found in tropical waters, these unique-looking creatures are often mistaken for sharks due to their upward fin. They are considered a delicacy in certain parts of Asia. Ralph Foster, the fish collection manager at the South Australian Museum, shed light on why many sunfish end up stranded on beaches. “One of the big dangers would be getting hit by big boats at sea. They often consume plastic bags, mistaking them for jellyfish, which can be fatal.”

The unexpected appearance of these gigantic and enigmatic sunfish continues to capture the imagination of those fortunate enough to witness their awe-inspiring presence.
