The Cutest Friendship in the World Between a Dog and a Duck
Despite being different species, the friendship between the dog Barclay and Andy the duck evokes envy in other species.
Barclay, a famously intelligent Golden Retriever, and Rudy, one of the Pekinese ducks residing with their flock for the past four years on owner Pam Ishiguro’s ranch in Orange County, California, share an intriguing bond. Initially, Rudy used to chase Barclay whenever he approached any of the ducks in the flock.
“Rudy is the leader of the pack,” explained Ms. Pam. “It commands everyone and everything. When Barclay tries to sniff any ducks, Rudy intervenes. Rudy would send Barclay away, and for quite some time, Barclay would run.”
However, in recent times, Barclay is no longer afraid of ducks. Perhaps it’s because he discovered that duck food is delicious, and he finds their bathwater enticing.
“Barclay likes to eat duck food; he knows there’s always food in the barn. So whenever he gets the chance, he sneaks into the barn and steals their food. He also likes to drink their bathwater. If he’s not spotted, he’ll come sniffing the ducks’ butts.”
Few people know that when the ducks were ducklings, Barclay was initially very afraid of those moving cotton balls. Even when his master caught the ducks in front of him, Barclay didn’t dare look. Maybe Barclay learned something when he saw another dog in the house, Izzy, a cross between a Chihuahua and a Terrier, playing around with the ducks all day.
“We were afraid Izzy would eat the ducks, so we scolded him every time he sneaked into the coop. Perhaps Barclay picked up on something.”
As time passed, the fear and animosity gradually faded away, and Barclay and Rudy became the closest couple on Miss Pam’s small farm. Wherever they go, they always have each other’s backs. There’s always one who chases and jumps on the other, but they never leave each other’s side. Even when they do separate, they call out to each other.
Now, whenever Rudy gets the chance, he takes possession of Barclay by jumping on him. Barclay doesn’t mind; it gives him the opportunity to sniff Rudy’s rear end, which benefits them both. Rudy also bites his toe if someone gets too close. The other ducks are aware that Barclay is now Rudy’s best friend. If any duck tries to get close, they should be cautious because Rudy will attack without warning.
“That all changed when the ducks grew up and became bigger than Izzy. The ducks only had to chase him once to teach him a lesson. Now Izzy is scared of ducks.”
