Stray Dog Roams Through Market, Hoping for a Rescuer
Homeless Dog Roams Through Market in Search of a Savior
When it comes to countries with the highest number of abandoned dogs, China stands out as a prime example. A 2019 report from the non-profit organization China Dialogue shed light on a staggering statistic: China is currently home to a whopping 40 million stray dogs, making up a significant portion of the global stray dog population. Amidst this sea of abandoned canines, one particular puppy’s story tugs at the heartstrings.
Meet Ryan, a pup who recently found himself in the spotlight thanks to a video shared by “Northwest Animal Rescue,” an NGO dedicated to animal welfare in China. Ryan’s home is an unconventional one—a bustling Chinese market. Unbeknownst to him, he meanders through the market’s aisles, lacking a stable home or a caring owner.
Ryan’s actions in the video have left countless viewers moved. Fearlessly, he roams around the market, mingling with shoppers and vendors. His adorable demeanor captures attention as he sits in front of market stalls and tables, his wide eyes seemingly seeking human connection.
He’s not hesitant to cozy up beneath people’s feet or nudge against their shoes, though not everyone is receptive. Some shoo him away, treating him as an inconvenience. It was in the midst of such a moment that a reporter captured Ryan’s story. Northwest Animal Rescue saw the video and felt compelled to step in.
In the sea of abandoned dogs that call the market home, Ryan stands out. Northwest Animal Rescue acknowledged their limitations, stating that they can’t save every dog, but they focus on rescuing the young, the vulnerable, and the sick. Ryan, being a small and approachable dog, fell within their scope.
Their decision was made: Ryan would be rescued. Under the cover of night, the rescue team embarked on their mission. As they navigated the market’s alleys, they encountered other abandoned dogs who responded with aggression. In contrast, Ryan wagged his tail and sought assistance, embodying his longing for human companionship.
China’s abandoned dog problem is profound and multifaceted. The China Dialogue report equates the status of dogs in China to that of a “fashionable accessory.” Pets are often kept not out of genuine affection but as symbols of trends. With the challenges of pet ownership, many animals are discarded and end up on the streets.
Adding to the issue are puppy mills, notorious for mass breeding of dogs. Female dogs endure a life of constant breeding, while unsold animals are sometimes subjected to blood collection for use in other puppies. This alarming cycle perpetuates the abandonment crisis.
