A Mother Gives Birth to Twins: One with Dark Skin and One with Albinism, Challenging Perceptions of Siblinghood
A Mother’s Battle Against Racism and Misconceptions Surrounding Albinism
In Williamsburg, Virginia, USA, a courageous mother is breaking her silence about the racism and skepticism she and her sons face daily. Dorian Johnson, a 25-year-old mother, shares her story of raising her black son, Zavied, and his albino twin brother, Zakari, who have often been misunderstood due to the difference in their skin color. Dorian, who herself is albino, hopes to shed light on the discrimination her family encounters and promote awareness and acceptance.
Dorian reveals that when she and her sons are in public, they often attract curious looks and inquiries. Many people mistakenly assume that Zavied is adopted rather than her biological child due to his lighter complexion. These constant misjudgments deeply affect Dorian as a mother, leaving her feeling hurt and defensive. She strongly opposes the idea of people making judgments solely based on skin color, considering it a form of everyday discrimination and racism.
Dorian’s frustration is evident when people question whether her sons are truly twins, despite the clear resemblance between them upon closer inspection. She emphasizes that people should not hastily judge others based on appearances and stresses that her sons are happy and healthy, which should be the ultimate focus. Children, she believes, should never be judged based on their skin color.
Dorian laments that albinism, especially in black individuals, remains widely misunderstood. She views it as a blessing and feels fortunate to be the mother of her unique twins. Dorian believes that raising awareness about albinism is essential to dispelling misconceptions.
Zavied and Zakari were born on February 11, 2018. Shortly after their birth, doctors informed Dorian and her 28-year-old partner, Michael Steppney, that Zavied had the most common type of albinism, which affects the skin, hair, and eyes. Albinism, a condition that affects roughly 1 in 20,000 people worldwide, results in hypopigmentation and characteristic fair skin and white or golden hair.
Albinism is an inherited condition, with a one in four chance of occurrence if both parents carry the faulty gene. In the case of non-identical twins, only one child can inherit the gene and develop albinism.
Dorian, who works in a clothing retailer, shared her emotional reaction to Zavied’s diagnosis. She anticipates the need to teach her son to embrace his uniqueness and differences, foreseeing it as a challenge. Dorian also worries about potential bullying her son may face at school due to his distinct appearance.
In the face of these challenges, Dorian Johnson remains a dedicated and determined mother, advocating for her sons and raising awareness about albinism and the need for acceptance and understanding in society. Her story serves as a powerful reminder that love and support should always outweigh judgments based on skin color or differences.
