Adorable Piglet Squid Spotted 4,500 Feet Below Sea Level in Pacific Ocean
In a heartwarming underwater encounter, scientists from the E/V Nautilus team stumbled upon the charming sight of an adorable piglet squid in its natural habitat deep within the Pacific Ocean. The incident took place during their deep-sea expedition near the Palmyra Atoll, approximately 1,000 miles south of Hawaii.
The piglet squid, scientifically known as Helicocranchia sp., showcased its inquisitive nature as it crossed paths with the researchers’ remotely operated underwater vehicle (ROV) at a depth of 4,500 feet (1,385 meters). This chance encounter granted the team a unique opportunity to capture close-up images and videos of this captivating marine creature.
The distinct characteristic that lends the squid its delightful name is its sizable siphon, resembling a snout, which allows the animal to move through the water using jet-like propulsion.
