Congratulations to the baby who has found his smile again after a difficult operation
A genetic disorder is a rare occurrence, with about 1 in 2,000 people being born with one. This showcases the complex and diverse biology of humans. Courtney and Gavin Gardner are parents to a daughter named Sutton, who was born with a cleft lip. During the 20th week of Courtney’s pregnancy, an ultrasound revealed that the baby had a cleft lip. Cleft lip and palate are rare conditions, affecting 1 in 1,600 babies, which occurs when a baby’s lips or mouth do not develop normally during pregnancy, due to various factors, such as food or drugs that the mother took or a genetic predisposition.
The Gardners missed out on a special baby photoshoot with their first son, and so, when Courtney became pregnant with Sutton, they decided to capture every moment of their daughter’s life. The photos were taken by photographer Shannon Morton and were shared on social media. One photo garnered over 750,000 likes and inspired many people to share their stories and photos.
The Gardners have started their own Facebook page, My Cleft Cutie, to help other parents whose children have been diagnosed with cleft lip or palate. Many people have shared their own experiences and have found comfort and encouragement through the Gardner’s page. The parents reassure their daughter every day that she is beautiful and has an amazing personality.
