The incredible unpredictability of childbirth never ceases to amaze, as the miraculous event unfolds spontaneously, anywhere, and at any time, unburdened by schedules, timetables, or predetermined plans. Women, in all their incredible strength, continue to demonstrate the extraordinary nature of the birthing process. It’s often said, “All you need is a vagina and some floor space.” But sometimes, it’s the backseat space that becomes the unexpected birthing suite. This is a tale of remarkable composure, exceptional support, and a beautiful, spontaneous birth.
In a stunning video that emerged on Instagram on the 24th of October, 33-year-old Dr. Gabriela Correia took center stage as she gave birth in the most unexpected of places: a gas station parking lot. By her side, providing unwavering support, were her husband, Gilberto Godoy, doula Joana Nunes, OB/GYN coworker Larissa Gomes, and photographer Deborah Ghelman, who beautifully documented the entire delivery.
As the urgency of the situation became apparent, and it became clear that there was no time to reach the hospital, Correia and Godoy, with a 9 cm dilation, rallied their reinforcements. Typically, pushing should commence when the cervix measures 10 cm. In an interview with Globo, Correia revealed, “We couldn’t wait to find out if it was a boy or a girl, but we decided to savor the moment and let it be a surprise. Little did I know it would turn out to be such an adventure.” Photographer Deborah Ghelman expressed her delight that the video has garnered global attention, highlighting what women can accomplish without the need for medical interventions like epidurals.
The awe-inspiring journey of Correia and Godoy welcomed their second son, baby Artur, into the world on October 24. Artur has since been discharged from the hospital and is now home with his family. Dr. Correia happily shared, “He’s super healthy and amazing.” She also extended her heartfelt gratitude to her incredible support network.
Every individual who played a part in this remarkable birth stood steadfastly by her side during the most challenging moments. Correia’s journey has been marked by both profound loss and the joy of new life. She acknowledged, “My first child died, and I had to go through a really difficult loss. They were at my side the entire time and gave me their support. So, I’ve traveled a long distance with them.”
