Killer Whales Launch 2-Ton Seals into the Sky Before Devouring Them
In an astonishing display of power and agility, killer whales have been observed playing with hapless seals by launching them into the sky before diving in for a meal.
The incident took place in Monterey Bay, California, USA, as captured by wildlife photographer Jodi Frediani. Jodi, along with other tourists, was on a whale-watching excursion when they heard a loud splash in the water. Suddenly, she witnessed a seal soaring through the air before plunging back into the water.
67-year-old Jodi recounts, “After observing humpback whales for over an hour, our group went to see killer whales. Fortunately, we were able to witness this spectacle as we spotted three killer whales traveling together in the Monterey Submarine Canyon area. The seal was launched 24 meters into the air before falling into the water.”
After propelling their prey into the air, the killer whales surfaced and continued their playful interaction with the small seal. The act of tossing seals into the air before consuming them is one of the fundamental hunting techniques employed by killer whales. Jodi shared that this was the second time she had witnessed this awe-inspiring behavior.
Northern elephant seals can reach lengths of up to 4 meters and weigh up to 2 tons. They are the second largest species of seals. However, compared to killer whales, the seals are nothing more than toys. An adult killer whale can grow up to 10 meters long and weigh 5 tons. The preferred prey of these marine mammals includes sea lions, seals, and even dolphins.
The phenomenon of killer whales launching seals into the air showcases their exceptional hunting abilities and strategic intelligence. While it may seem shocking, it serves as a reminder of the intricate relationships and survival tactics that exist within the natural world.
