The distressing incident occurred when Kayla’s father went to pick her up from her mother’s residence on July 5, only to discover that she was nowhere to be found. It was later revealed that Heather had packed her car and disappeared with Kayla on July 4.
Following her disappearance, the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children shared a photograph of nine-year-old Kayla, along with an age-progression image, in an effort to raise awareness. A Facebook page was also created to spread the word, and periodic news articles highlighted her case in the local community.
It was Kayla’s appearance on the Netflix reboot of “Unsolved Mysteries” that ultimately led to her rescue. A store owner, who had recently watched an episode of the show, recognized Kayla and immediately contacted the authorities, resulting in the arrest of Heather. Kayla, now 15 years old, has been placed in protective custody.
Kayla’s father expressed his overwhelming joy and extended his gratitude to the South Elgin Police Department, the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children, and all the law enforcement agencies involved in the case.
