A breathtaking sight awaits those who venture into the heart of the Italian Dolomites, where a solitary refuge seems to defy gravity, clinging to the sheer rock face of a towering mountain peak. This century-old dwelling, known as the Buffa di Perrero shelter, is perched at an elevation of 2,760 meters and offers a glimpse into history, adventure, and architectural wonder.
Originally established as a refuge for Alpine soldiers who courageously battled Austrian troops during World War I, the Buffa di Perrero shelter carries a rich legacy. Named after Colonel Carlo Buffa di Perrero, who led the Cadore battalion, the refuge has undergone restoration, putting it back on the map as a unique and captivating structure.
What makes this shelter truly remarkable is its seamless integration into the mountainside. From certain angles, it almost disappears into the rugged terrain, visible only from the front. Sturdy brick walls form its foundation, supporting a sloping roof, and it features two entrances and four windows that can be shuttered. The location provides a commanding view of the valley below, although approaching the entrance requires caution due to the steep precipice nearby.
In 2022, the Alpini 6th Regiment undertook a successful restoration effort after the shelter’s roof had collapsed under the weight of heavy snowfall eighteen months earlier. This preservation ensures that the refuge continues to stand as a testament to both its historical significance and its architectural ingenuity.
Recently, mountain enthusiast Matteo Peroni embarked on a remarkable 12-mile (approximately 20-kilometer) circular route to reach the refuge. Accompanied by two friends and a GoPro camera, they captured their adventure, which they later shared on YouTube. After traversing snowy mountain paths and passing scenic peaks, the group arrived at their destination, spending a night within the cozy shelter complete with a wood-burning stove and wooden bunk beds.
