The Sikorsky UH-60 Black Hawk is a remarkable four-blade, twin-engine, medium-lift utility military helicopter. It was named after the renowned Native American war leader, Black Hawk, and entered service with the U.S. Army in 1979, replacing the Bell UH-1 Iroquois as the primary tactical transport helicopter. The UH-60 boasts a design with four-blade main and tail rotors, and it is powered by two General Electric T700 turboshaft engines.
Noteworthy features of the UH-60M Black Hawk include wide chord rotor blades, T700-GE-701D engines, improved durability gearbox, Integrated Vehicle Health Management System (IVHMS) computer, and a modern glass cockpit. Production of these advanced helicopters commenced in 2006.
Australia’s history with Black Hawk helicopters dates back to the late 1980s when they ordered their first batch, followed by additional acquisitions in the following years. These helicopters have been actively used in various operational capacities in countries such as Cambodia, Papua New Guinea, Indonesia, East Timor, and Pakistan.
In 2021, the decision was made to retire the S-70A-9 Black Hawks due to performance issues with the MRH-90s. The Australian Government then announced its intention to replace these helicopters with up to 40 UH-60M Black Hawks. While the official order is pending, there is hope that the delivery of six UH-60Ms may begin in 2023, with the full complement expected to be in service by 2026.
